I feel a cold starting. Which should I take?
If you are going to take either, zinc lozenges have the better case — because their modest benefit is the one that shows up when you start AFTER symptoms begin, which is when everybody actually starts. Vitamin C's small benefit only appears in people who were already taking it. Be honest with yourself about the size of the effect though: we are talking about shaving some hours off a week-long illness, not curing anything. Rest, fluids and time are doing most of the work.
What actually prevents colds?
Not supplements. Hand hygiene, avoiding crowded indoor spaces during peak season, and — for influenza, which is a different and far more serious illness — vaccination. Sleep matters too: short sleep is genuinely associated with greater susceptibility. It is a much less satisfying list than a fizzy orange sachet, which is precisely why the sachet sells.
