Can you actually boost your immune system?
Not in the way the phrase implies, and the clearest way to see this is to ask what a 'boosted' immune system would actually look like. The answer is uncomfortable: a hyper-responsive immune system attacking harmless things is ALLERGY, and one attacking your own tissue is AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE. Neither is something to aspire to. A healthy immune system is not strong; it is well-regulated — proportionate, discriminating, and quiet when nothing is wrong. What you can do is support it: sleep properly, exercise, don't smoke, keep your weight in a reasonable range, get vaccinated, and correct any genuine nutrient deficiency. That last one is repair, not enhancement, and the difference between those two words is where an entire industry lives.
So do supplements do nothing for immunity?
They do something in exactly one situation: if you are genuinely deficient in a nutrient your immune system needs, correcting that deficiency will improve how it functions. That is real and worth knowing. But it is fixing a deficit, not raising a ceiling — and in someone who is already replete, there is no evidence that more of a nutrient produces a better immune response.
