Overview

Fasting insulin is the level of the hormone insulin after an overnight fast. It reflects how hard the pancreas is working to keep glucose in range.

Why it matters

Insulin resistance often develops years before glucose rises: the pancreas compensates by secreting more insulin, keeping glucose normal for a time. A high fasting insulin can therefore flag early metabolic dysfunction that glucose alone would miss.
