Overview
HOMA-IR (Homeostatic Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance) is a simple calculation from fasting glucose and fasting insulin that estimates how insulin-resistant a person is.
Why it matters

Where the evidence points
Roughly < 1.0 suggests good insulin sensitivity; values above ~2.5–2.9 commonly indicate insulin resistance in many populations.
Cutoffs are population-specific and depend on the (non-standardized) insulin assay; HOMA-IR is a research/context tool, not a formal diagnosis.
