Overview

Gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) is an enzyme found in the liver and bile ducts. It is a sensitive — but non-specific — marker of liver and biliary stress, and it also tracks with oxidative stress and cardiometabolic risk.

Why it matters

GGT helps interpret other liver tests (a raised ALP with a raised GGT points to a liver/biliary source) and flags alcohol-related and fatty-liver injury. Elevated GGT is also independently associated with cardiovascular and metabolic risk.

Laboratory upper limits are roughly < 40–60 U/L (assay- and sex-dependent); lower is generally better, and values within range still carry graded risk.
